The ART of Friendship: Bringing the Community Together in the Spirit of Friendship

June 15-19

The ART of Friendship is a cultural exposition on the topic of friendship, and featuring several mixed-media events including film screenings, art gallery exhibits, music performances, and community art-making.

The Expo kicks off with two screenings at Reel Films at Frelones, 2781 Dunsmuir Avenue in Cumberland.

Tuesday, June 15 at 7pm there will be a screening of the film ?BENNY AND JOON? (1993) Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik. With Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, Aidan Quinn. A mentally ill young woman finds her love in an eccentric man who models himself after Buster Keaton. Rating: G

Wednesday, June 16 at 7pm there will be a screening of ?50 FIRST DATES? Directed by Peter Segal. With Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider. Henry Roth is a man afraid of commitment up until he meets the beautiful (forgetful) Lucy. Rating: PG-13

Both of these screenings will be by donation.

On Thursday, June 18 from 7-10 pm there will be an art opening and community collage creation at Zocalo Cafe, 208 5th Street in Courtenay. There will be storytelling and a musical performance by special guests Hazel Lennox, Judy Norbury and friends as part of the evening.

On Friday, June 19 at 5:30 there will be an community barbeque at Simms Park. Free hotdogs, hamburgers, veggie dogs and burgers will be served.

The live music portion of this festival will take place on the evening of Saturday, June 19 at Zocalo Cafe, with DJ Souls and live musical performances.

The intention of The ART of Friendship expo is to build bridges within the art community between all of our diverse members. The theme of the event is Friendship, with all of its complex nuances, frustrations, successes and negotiations. The ART of Friendship is a Friendship Project Initiative, and this is the first year of this Expo. The Friendship Project works with young adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities towards forming friendships within the Comox Valley Community.
